Right now I’m sitting in my car in the Pacifica State Beach parking lot. I surfed today, like I often do. I drank some coffee. Also common. I wrote some emails. Nothing special of note for the day, except that it is sunny and I was convinced it would be cold and cloudy today. I’ll take this last little hurrah of summer.Â
But this moment, even though I’m writing my newsletter, trying to keep up a promise to you all and myself, it feels good. A quiet little break from all the sadness, confusion, and rushing around that has been surrounding me lately. Even just hearing the rush of a highway from a cracked window can sometimes feel like just enough peace.Â
Before writing this I took it in. I watched all the cars moving, the jostling for parking, the bickering between families, the unhinged dogs desperately trying to play with another dog, the kids smoking a blunt in a huge circle on the sand. And the waves, the incessant breaking of waves. White caps further out in the distance surrounding fishing boats.
Really this is a long preamble to say I’ve been busy, and in this bit of spare time I want to tell you about some articles of mine that just came out. It’s a short newsletter this week, but I hope y’all take a look at what’s been occupying my time of late!Â
The links will be down below!
It was here at Pacifica State Beach that I saw my first breaching humpback whale this year. Eventually I started to obsess so I turned that curiosity into an article about why they have been so close to shore and how a ban on whaling in the West Coast in the 70s has been a key bit of law that has helped bring back these whales from a brush with extinction. It’s out now in the Pacific Sun, which you can pick up in Marin now (or wait until next week when it will be out in the North Bay Bohemian in Sonoma!).
Before that piece came out, however, I had the joy of writing a short review of Lucy Stark and Fabian Cappello’s show in Point Reyes, Tabletop. The show felt like a last little taste of summer, and anyone out there should check it out! That’s out in the Pacific Sun this week as well!
That’s all I had time for this week but thanks for reading! Next week I’ll tell you about some huge trout I saw in the Yuba!

I am also so obsessed with humpback whales but I have yet to see one (not sure where the closest potential viewing point to Walnut Creek would be.) Great article and glad to know you also find these animals so fascinating!
